Guwahati, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : Oil India Limited (OIL), a public sector energy company, is actively promoting new opportunities in the energy sector through research, innovation, and startups. A key aspect of this initiative is its partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati. Dr. Ranjit Rath, Chairman and Managing Director of Oil India, shared insights on Thursday about the company’s collaboration with IIT Guwahati on several innovation-driven projects and startups. One significant project aims to develop enzymes that can enhance the productivity and production capacity of ethanol and other bio-based products derived from bamboo.
Dr. Rath emphasized that programs like the MC2+ Ignite Challenge are instrumental in strengthening the startup ecosystem and promoting new technologies. These initiatives also aim to foster collaboration between industry and academic institutions.
He highlighted the ‘Samudra Manthan Mission’ announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a pivotal initiative for India’s energy sector. The mission focuses on encouraging the exploration of oil and gas in India’s deep and ultra-deep marine areas.
During the Independence Day address, the Prime Minister mentioned the mission’s goal of unlocking marine energy resources. Approximately 1 million square kilometers of India’s marine territory will be made available for exploration, covering strategically important areas such as the eastern and western coasts, the exclusive economic zone, and the Andaman Basin.
Dr. Rath noted that the government has devised a comprehensive plan to promote exploration in deep-sea regions, allocating nearly $8 billion for this purpose. Of this amount, approximately $2.4 billion will be specifically allocated for data acquisition. High-quality geological and geophysical data collection is crucial for assessing the potential of oil and gas reserves in deep-sea areas, laying a strong foundation for future exploration campaigns.
The Samudra Manthan Mission could significantly enhance India’s energy security. Currently, a substantial portion of India’s energy needs is met through imports. Discovering new domestic oil and gas reserves may reduce import dependency and boost energy self-sufficiency.
The collaboration between Oil India and IIT Guwahati, along with government initiatives in biofuels and new energy technologies, signals India’s commitment to a long-term strategy in both traditional and emerging energy sectors. This approach is expected to not only strengthen the energy sector but also create new opportunities for innovation, investment, and employment.
