Ahmedabad, August 27: Customs officials at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport seized approximately 300 grams of concealed gold jewelry from passengers arriving on three international flights. This operation was conducted by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) based on passenger profiling.
According to customs, three separate cases were identified involving passengers from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Kuwait.
In total, 299.490 grams of gold jewelry were confiscated, including 240.090 grams of 24-carat gold and 59.400 grams of 22-carat gold. The total market value of the seized items was ₹49,23,602.
In the first case, a woman arriving on Etihad Airways flight EY-246 from Abu Dhabi was stopped by AIU officials. During the investigation, two concealed chains weighing 100.060 grams of 24-carat gold were found. The value of this jewelry was ₹16,72,003, and it was seized under the Customs Act of 1962.
In the second case, a couple arriving on Air Arabia flight G9-418 from Sharjah was intercepted. Officials discovered four bangles and two chains weighing a total of 140.030 grams of 24-carat gold. The market value of this jewelry was ₹23,41,739, and it was also seized under the Customs Act.
In the third case, a woman arriving on Kuwait Airways flight KU-347 from Kuwait was stopped. She possessed a gold necklace, two earrings, a ring, and a chain with a pendant, totaling 59.400 grams. This jewelry was of 22-carat purity and valued at ₹9,09,860.
Customs officials stated that these actions were based on passenger profiling, with checks conducted upon arrival at the airport. This seizure occurred just two days after Ahmedabad Customs apprehended a woman arriving from Sharjah, who allegedly concealed 499.540 grams of 24-carat gold chain inside her high-neck sweater. That seizure was also based on AIU’s passenger profiling. Further investigations into these recent cases are ongoing.
