Ghalibaf Emerges as a Key Figure in Iranian Politics, Dismissing Trumps Proposal as Fake News

New Delhi, March 24: In recent times, a name has been making waves in Iranian politics: Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Currently serving as the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, or Iran’s parliament, reports suggest that his role is crucial in potential negotiations with the United States. His outspoken criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump on social media has also garnered significant attention.

When Trump proposed a five-day ceasefire on Monday, Ghalibaf was quick to label it as fake news. He outright rejected the U.S. proposal, stating, “Our people demand severe punishment for aggressors. Until this goal is achieved, all officials stand firmly with their leader and the public. There have been no negotiations with the U.S. These false reports aim to manipulate financial and oil markets and to extricate the U.S. and Israel from the quagmire they are in.”

Born in 1961 in the northeastern Iranian city of Torqabeh, Ghalibaf’s early life unfolded amid significant political upheaval in the country. The 1979 Islamic Revolution played a pivotal role in shaping his thoughts and career. This was the period when the monarchy in Iran was abolished, leading to the establishment of the Islamic Republic.

Ghalibaf began his career in the military, serving as a pilot in the Iranian Air Force and later joining the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). His administrative skills led him to hold several important positions within the country. He served as the Chief of Iran’s National Police, where he implemented various measures to strengthen law and order. Subsequently, he had a lengthy tenure as the Mayor of Tehran, focusing on urban development and infrastructure projects.

In 2020, Ghalibaf was elected as the Speaker of Parliament, a position previously held by Ali Larijani. As Speaker, he plays a vital role in guiding legislative processes and national policies.

Driven by political ambition, Ghalibaf has run for the presidency multiple times but has not achieved success. In the 2024 elections, he finished third, with Masoud Pezeshkian winning and Saeed Jalili coming in second. Ghalibaf is generally viewed as a “hardliner” in Iranian politics.

Currently, international media reports suggest that the U.S. sees Ghalibaf as a significant negotiator to help alleviate ongoing tensions and war-like conditions with Iran. However, Ghalibaf has dismissed these claims, reiterating that no negotiations have taken place. He has also criticized Trump’s policies and strategies on social media.

Meanwhile, Politico reported on Monday, citing two U.S. government officials, that Trump’s administration is quietly viewing Ghalibaf as a potential partner and even a future leader.

Overall, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf is an influential and experienced leader within Iran’s power structure, whose political and administrative experience makes him a significant figure both domestically and on the international stage.
