Cuttack, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : The Sambalpur Warriors kicked off their campaign in the Odisha T20 League with a thrilling victory, defeating the Cuttack Panthers by 9 runs at the Barabati Stadium.
Batting first, the Warriors posted an impressive total of 193 runs, losing 8 wickets in the process. Captain Gaurav Chaudhary played a pivotal role, scoring a powerful 88 runs off 46 balls, which included 9 fours and 6 sixes. He received solid support from Shantanu Mishra, and together they forged a remarkable opening partnership of 135 runs. Mishra contributed significantly with a brisk 60 runs from 40 balls before departing.
However, the Warriors faced a mid-innings collapse after Chaudhary’s dismissal, losing wickets at regular intervals. Despite this, they managed to reach 193 runs, with Abhishek Singh emerging as the standout bowler for the Panthers, claiming 3 wickets for 32 runs in his 4 overs.
In response, the Cuttack Panthers struggled early, losing two wickets in the initial overs. Their situation worsened during the powerplay, with four batsmen back in the pavilion within the first six overs. MG Gopal and Karthik Biswal attempted to stabilize the innings. Gopal held one end steady while Biswal took an aggressive approach, scoring a blistering 56 runs off just 28 balls.
The turning point came with Biswal’s wicket, which shifted the momentum back to the Warriors. Gopal continued to fight but the Panthers lost wickets consistently, ultimately finishing their innings at 184 runs for 9 wickets. For his stellar performance, Gaurav Chaudhary was named the ‘Player of the Match.’
Reflecting on the victory, Chaudhary expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance. “It’s always great to start the tournament with a win. As a team, we wanted a positive beginning, and I’m glad I could contribute with the bat. The partnership with Shantanu provided a solid foundation for our score. There are areas we can improve upon, but this first win gives us good confidence moving forward,” he stated.
