New Delhi, May 1: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced a new initiative to provide free drinking water at 23 major bus terminals in the city. This decision comes as part of the Heatwave Action Plan, aimed at ensuring the health and comfort of passengers and staff during extreme heat conditions.
On Friday, Gupta, along with Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, directed the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) officials to implement special measures to protect travelers from the heat.
According to an official, DTC will distribute 200 ML packets of drinking water in glasses and pouches across 3,000 running buses. Additionally, water dispensers will be installed at select terminals to keep passengers and staff hydrated.
The ‘Jaldut’ initiative by DTC aims to provide immediate relief to the public, particularly daily commuters who are most affected by the scorching heat. Launched last year under the guidance of the transport minister, the initiative received an overwhelmingly positive response from the public.
An official statement noted that this proactive measure has significantly alleviated citizens’ discomfort during peak summer, reinforcing the government’s commitment to accountable and citizen-centric governance.
Building on this success, the initiative has been further strengthened this year to expand its reach and impact. Singh emphasized that arrangements have been made to ensure free drinking water is available on all 3,000 DTC buses operating throughout the city.
The statement also highlighted that this step will greatly enhance water availability for passengers during their journeys. DTC has urged all travelers to remain vigilant during heat waves, stay hydrated, and avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours.
In reviewing the heatwave action plan, the Chief Minister previously instructed all hospitals to ensure adequate bed capacity for heat-related cases and to equip every ambulance with necessary facilities to handle heat emergencies.
The statement revealed that over 339 health centers across Delhi have been stocked with ORS, ice packs, and other essential supplies, while more than 30 hospitals have set up special ‘cool rooms’ for treating heat-related illnesses. Additionally, 174 medical officers and ASHA workers have been trained to address heat-related diseases, and 330 ambulances are on standby for emergency responses.
Gupta also called for a comprehensive awareness campaign throughout the city to educate residents about preventive measures. Schools have been directed to implement a ‘Water Bell’ system to encourage students to drink water regularly and prevent dehydration.
