
Kolkata, June 25: A devastating incident occurred in the Taratala area of Kolkata when the roof of an under-construction warehouse collapsed. President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan have expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy. So far, nine people have lost their lives, and many others are injured, with fears that some individuals may still be trapped under the debris as rescue operations continue.
In a message shared on social media, the President stated that the news of the fatalities due to the warehouse roof collapse in Kolkata is extremely tragic. She extended her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished for the swift and complete recovery of the injured.
Similarly, the Vice President expressed his deep distress over the loss of life in the warehouse collapse. He conveyed his sympathies to the families of the deceased and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured.
Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced in the assembly that the state government would provide a compensation of ₹10 lakh to the families of the deceased. He also declared financial assistance of ₹1 lakh for each of the injured.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) had previously announced assistance of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
Chief Minister Adhikari informed the assembly that rescue operations commenced within 30 minutes of the incident on Wednesday afternoon. Initial relief efforts were carried out by the Kolkata Police, the state fire service, and local residents. Later, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Indian Army personnel joined the operation.
He stated that the rescue efforts continued throughout the night and were ongoing on Thursday. According to the Chief Minister, nine fatalities have been confirmed, while treatment for the injured is still underway. He also mentioned that there are concerns that some individuals may still be trapped under the rubble, and efforts to rescue them are ongoing.
The Chief Minister noted that the state government’s Sports Minister Indranil Khan and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul were among the first to arrive at the scene. Other senior ministers, including Fire Minister Kaushik Chaudhuri and Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee, also arrived to oversee the relief operations.
He emphasized that he had been monitoring the situation from the start but chose to manage the initial response at the administrative level to avoid hindering the rescue efforts. He later visited the site and hospitals to meet the injured.
