Paris, March 31: France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has issued a strong condemnation of Israel. He stated that “serious incidents” have occurred involving the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in the Nakoura region.
Barrot emphasized that it is completely unacceptable for Israeli soldiers to violate security protocols and intimidate UN personnel. He noted that France has formally registered its strong opposition to Israel through its ambassador in Paris.
According to Xinhua News Agency, Barrot also condemned the gunfire that occurred on Sunday, which resulted in the death of an Indonesian peacekeeper and injured three others. Additionally, he described the explosion on Monday that killed two Indonesian peacekeepers and injured two more as extremely serious.
In light of these events, Barrot has called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council. He urged all parties to respect UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and ensure the safety of UN personnel. He also stated that UNIFIL should be allowed to carry out its work freely and without obstruction.
However, UNIFIL has not yet directly named Israel as the source of the attacks and has initiated an investigation. Nevertheless, Lebanon’s national news agency and local media reported that shells fired from Israeli artillery struck the headquarters of the Indonesian contingent stationed with UNIFIL on Sunday.
On Monday, Indonesia confirmed casualties among its soldiers and reiterated its condemnation of Israel’s military actions in southern Lebanon. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also criticized these incidents, stating that they represent a serious violation of international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution 1701.
It is noteworthy that tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border have been escalating since March 2. On that day, Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel for the first time since the ceasefire on November 27, 2024, prompting Israel to intensify airstrikes in southern and eastern Lebanon.
