Assam Elections: Central Minister Predicts Debabrata Saikias Loss in Traditional Stronghold

Guwahati, April 3: Central Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, claimed on Thursday that the BJP will secure the Nazira seat in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, predicting that Congress leader Debabrata Saikia will lose his stronghold this time.

While campaigning for BJP candidate Mayur Borgohain in Nazira, Margherita stated that the ground reality has shifted in favor of the ruling party.

He emphasized that voters in the region are now looking to align with the government for development and better opportunities.

“The people of Nazira want to stay with the government. They are hopeful for progress and will vote for change this time,” Margherita asserted, claiming strong support for the BJP across the area.

Notably, Nazira has traditionally been a Congress stronghold. In the 2016 Assembly elections, senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia retained this seat by a comfortable margin, even as the BJP came to power in the state.

In the 2021 elections, Saikia further solidified his position by defeating BJP candidates.

Currently, Saikia serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly and is considered one of the prominent leaders of the Congress party in the state.

He is known for his organizational skills and grassroots connection, playing a crucial role in maintaining Congress’s relevance in Upper Assam despite the BJP’s growing influence.

Saikia is also the son of former Chief Minister Hiteshwar Saikia, a significant figure in Assam’s political landscape who served multiple terms as Chief Minister.

However, despite this political legacy and past electoral performance, the BJP believes that anti-incumbency sentiments and development issues could alter the dynamics of the contest for the Nazira seat this time.

A tough battle is anticipated on April 9 during the elections.
