Singur, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : Police in Singur, West Bengal, have arrested Arnab Sinha Roy, a close associate of former state minister Becharam Manna, on charges of fraudulent land sales. The arrest occurred on Sunday, and Roy was subsequently presented before the Chandanagar sub-divisional court. The case has been registered under non-bailable sections of the law.
While being taken to court, Roy denied all allegations, claiming he is a victim of a political conspiracy.
The complaint stems from the 2001 death of Tarapad Mandal, a resident of Jhankari village in the Singur police jurisdiction. It is alleged that his property was fraudulently sold in 2014. Mandal’s sons filed a complaint in 2017, stating they had also approached Manna regarding the issue, but no action was taken at that time.
Following a change in state government this year, Vishwanath Mandal, one of Tarapad’s sons, lodged a new complaint with the police. This led to the arrest of two individuals, and further investigation resulted in Roy’s detention.
Local sources indicate that Roy had maintained good relations with Becharam Manna and his wife, Karbi Manna. Allegations suggest he exploited these connections to engage in various unethical activities.
Vishwanath Mandal has claimed that nearly 90% of his family’s land was sold fraudulently. He has urged the administration to help reclaim their land, noting that there are several other similar cases where ordinary citizens’ land has allegedly been wrongfully seized.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has stated that while Roy held no official position in the Trinamool Congress, his close ties to Manna allowed him to assume significant responsibilities within the district council’s Public Works Department (PWD) contractor organization. The BJP has accused the former minister of using his influence to prevent any action on complaints lodged against Roy at that time.
