Former Minister Semmalai Resigns from AIADMK Amid Internal Turmoil

Chennai, May 18: In a significant development for the AIADMK party, former minister Semmalai announced his resignation on Monday amidst ongoing internal conflicts. He cited two primary reasons for his departure: dissatisfaction with the party’s functioning and feeling sidelined since the passing of former Chief Minister Jayalalitha.

Following his resignation announcement, Semmalai issued a statement expressing his discontent with the current state of the party. He emphasized that the prevailing conditions within AIADMK have caused him considerable distress.

Notably, Semmalai chose to resign at a time when factionalism and disagreements among senior leaders are rampant within the party, leading to uncertainty about its future. He alleged that after Jayalalitha’s death, he was deprived of several key opportunities, despite his long-standing loyalty to the party.

He further claimed that many deserving leaders are being overlooked, and this trend is increasing, causing frustration among party workers. Semmalai also voiced concerns about the deteriorating public image of AIADMK, noting that the party is being ridiculed in the media and among the public due to its internal strife.

He questioned why a party once considered one of the strongest in Tamil Nadu politics is now facing such instability. He remarked that the ongoing events within the party are painful for those who have dedicated decades to its prosperity, only to be neglected now.

In a sharp critique, he stated, “A Kapoor can be extinguished, but can a party be extinguished in the same way?” His departure is seen as a challenge to AIADMK leadership, especially during a time when the party is grappling with factional disputes. This raises questions about the unity of the party.

Political analysts believe that this resignation may ignite discussions about leadership, internal democracy, and the overall structure of the party in the coming days. However, AIADMK has yet to release a statement regarding Semmalai’s resignation.
