Kolkata, March 31: The West Bengal assembly elections are set to take place next month, with voting occurring in two phases across 294 seats. Most constituencies will witness a four-cornered contest, but the three hill seats of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Kurseong will see a five-way battle.
In these regions, the main political players include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) led by Bimal Gurung, the Indian Gorkha Democratic Front established by Anit Thapa, the Indian Gorkha Janashakti Morcha founded by Ajay Edwards, the Left Front-AISF alliance, and the Congress party.
Political analysts believe that the Independent Gorkha Janmukti Front (IGJF) entering the fray complicates the dynamics for both the BJP and the Trinamool Congress-supported Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), particularly in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Kurseong, where Gorkha voters play a decisive role in determining election outcomes.
Despite this, all rival parties officially claim that the IGJF’s entry has made their victories in these constituencies easier. The BJP and its hill ally, GJM, argue that the IGJF is perceived as an anti-BJP force in the hills, which may siphon off Gorkha votes from the BJP and GJM.
Conversely, the BGPM and Trinamool Congress assert that the IGJF will primarily harm the BJP-GJM alliance’s core voter base, thereby increasing the chances of BGPM-Trinamool Congress candidates winning in these constituencies.
However, IGJF leader Ajay Edwards disagrees with both assessments. He argues that the hill residents, particularly the Gorkhas, are disillusioned by unfulfilled promises regarding a permanent political solution, including the demand for a separate Gorkhaland state.
In this context, he suggests that voters in these constituencies may opt for an alternative political party capable of effectively raising hill issues in the assembly.
