New Delhi, June 18: Veteran player Manpreet Singh, who holds the record for the most matches played for the Indian men’s hockey team, credits his fitness for his success. He emphasized that focusing on fitness has allowed him to represent the country for such an extended period.
In a recent media interaction, Manpreet responded to a question by stating, “To remain in the national team, continuous improvement is essential, regardless of age or experience. As the number of matches increases, I must enhance my fitness because if I am not fit, I won’t secure my place in the team.”
He added, “The coaching staff has always conveyed that performance and selection are closely linked to fitness. The message from the coach is clear: if you want to stay in the team, you must be fit. Maintaining fitness is a year-round commitment. There is no room for negligence, even during breaks from competition.”
Manpreet mentioned, “Whenever I am on a break or in a camp, I continue my fitness routine to stay in shape. If I want to play for India, I must keep myself fit, and I have worked hard for my fitness. I have also been mindful of my diet.”
He noted that the demands of the sport have significantly increased in recent years, making it imperative to not compromise on fitness.
Having played 413 matches, Manpreet made his debut for India in 2011. He plays as a midfielder and is a crucial part of the team. Over the past decade, he has played a significant role in elevating Indian hockey on the international stage and achieving success in major events like the Olympics.
