First Phase of SIR Launched in Jammu and Kashmir, Says Chief Electoral Officer Sanjeev Verma

Jammu, March 6: The process of SIR (Special Initiative for Registration) is underway in several states across the country. The first phase has now commenced in Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Electoral Officer Sanjeev Verma confirmed this information during a conversation, highlighting that the SIR process is similar to what is happening in other parts of the country, where it has already been completed in some areas.

Verma stated that preparations have been initiated with full diligence. The key roles in this process are played by the Electoral Registration Officers (ERO), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AERO), and Booth Level Officers (BLO). The proceedings have been conducted smoothly. Eligible voters will be re-registered, and potential voters—those who have not registered for various reasons or who will turn 18—have also been mapped. He expressed confidence that this would be a straightforward exercise, assuring that there is no need for concern.

He further explained that under the SIR process, BLOs will conduct door-to-door surveys. They will assist voters in filling out forms. If someone is not home at the time, family members can complete the form on their behalf. Verma noted that this SIR initiative will be conducted for the first time in 20 years across the country, including Jammu and Kashmir.

On February 19, an official announced that SIR would be implemented in Delhi and 22 other states and union territories starting in April to purify the voter list. The states and union territories scheduled for the next round of SIR include Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Ladakh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, NCT Delhi, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, Tripura, Telangana, and Uttarakhand.
