First Kumbh Abhishek at Somnath Temple to Feature Prime Minister Modi

Gir Somnath, May 11: The majestic spire of Somnath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, will undergo a Kumbh Abhishek using sacred water from eleven holy pilgrimage sites across India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend this significant ceremony.

During the event, the holy water from these eleven sites will be poured onto the temple’s 90-meter-high spire. This ceremony is part of the ‘Somnath Amrit Parv-2026’, celebrating 75 years since the temple’s reconstruction and re-consecration.

The event will take place from May 8 to May 11. It marks the 75th anniversary of the reconstruction of the first Jyotirlinga temple after India’s independence.

Somnath Temple symbolizes the renaissance of Sanatan heritage. Its reconstruction was initiated following a proposal by India’s first Deputy Prime Minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

According to organizers, this will be the first Kumbh Abhishek performed at the newly reconstructed Somnath Temple. Traditionally associated with temples in South India, this ritual is typically held every 10 to 12 years as a purification ceremony.

A specially designed pot with a capacity of 1,100 liters has been prepared for this ritual. Officials report that the pot weighs 760 kilograms, and when filled with water, its total weight will reach approximately 1.86 metric tons.

Standing eight feet tall, the pot will contain sacred water collected from the eleven pilgrimage sites.

The pot will be lifted to the temple’s spire using a 350-ton all-terrain crane positioned outside the temple complex. Officials have noted that the crane’s boom has been specially extended to reach the 90-meter height of the spire.

Preparations have been made under the ‘zero load principle’ to ensure that no additional structural burden is placed on the temple, keeping this heritage structure completely safe during the ceremony.

The Roads and Buildings Department has overseen the preparation and installation of the ritual infrastructure.

The water in the pot will be released onto the temple’s spire through a remote-controlled sensor mechanism, with the Abhishek expected to be completed in three minutes amidst the chanting of Vedic mantras.

This grand religious event will feature 51 priests performing the Atirudra Path and Vedic chants, alongside a three-day Maharudra Yajna with 125,000 offerings.

Additionally, the Indian Air Force’s Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team will conduct a special aerial display using six Hawk MK-132 aircraft during the ceremony.
