Fire Destroys 43 Shops in Badakhshan, Afghanistan

Kabul, March 22: A devastating fire in a market in Badakhshan province, northern Afghanistan, has resulted in the destruction of 43 shops. The provincial department of information and culture released a statement detailing the incident. Shop owners have suffered significant losses due to this disaster.

On Saturday evening, the statement revealed that the fire broke out at the Ab Jim Market in the Raghistan district. Initial estimates suggest that shop owners incurred losses amounting to approximately 22 million Afghanis (around $349,000).

The cause of the fire remains unknown. According to the Xinhua News Agency, local authorities have dispatched investigation teams to the scene, and inquiries are underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Fires are a common occurrence in Afghanistan, often attributed to inadequate safety standards, faulty electrical wiring, and a lack of modern firefighting equipment, particularly in remote areas.

In a separate incident, at least four passengers died and three others were injured in a vehicle overturning in the northern province of Faryab, as reported by the Bakhtar News Agency on Saturday. The accident occurred near dense forests in the Dawlat Abad district when the driver lost control of the vehicle due to negligence, causing it to veer off the road and overturn, resulting in four fatalities at the scene and injuries to three others.

The injured were transported to a nearby health center for treatment.

Road accidents remain a significant cause of death in Afghanistan, often resulting from reckless driving on crowded roads, poor road conditions, and a lack of traffic signs on highways.
