New Delhi, March 16: Amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, keeping the Hormuz Strait open is crucial. Its closure could significantly impact global markets and the economy. European Union’s foreign affairs chief, Kaja Kallas, announced that EU member states will discuss strategies to maintain the strait’s accessibility.
Kallas emphasized the importance of this issue, stating that the EU will explore what actions can be taken from Europe to ensure the Hormuz Strait remains open. Speaking to reporters ahead of a foreign affairs meeting in Brussels, she remarked, “Keeping the Hormuz Strait open is in our interest, and we are discussing what Europe can do about it.”
Previously, former U.S. President Donald Trump urged countries in Europe and elsewhere to assist in keeping the strait open, which is a vital route for global oil supply.
Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top diplomat, mentioned that EU foreign ministers will consider enhancing the Red Sea naval mission to help reopen the strategically important Hormuz Strait.
She suggested that one option could involve modifying the mandate of the EU’s naval mission, Operation Aspide, in the Red Sea. Kallas indicated that this could be the quickest way for the 27-member group to bolster security in the Hormuz Strait, particularly after Iranian attacks in response to U.S.-Israeli bombing campaigns have severely disrupted maritime traffic.
“If we want security in this region, the easiest approach would be to utilize existing operations in the area, possibly with some adjustments. However, it remains to be seen if EU member states are willing to use this for that purpose,” Kallas added.
She also mentioned that consideration could be given to a coalition of willing partners, without providing further details.
