Englands Stellar Performance Earns Them Victory Against New Zealand

Colombo, February 28: In a thrilling encounter at the T20 World Cup 2026, New Zealand faced a 4-wicket defeat against England during the Super-8 round. The match took place at the R. Premadasa Cricket Stadium, where England successfully chased down New Zealand’s target of 160 runs, losing 6 wickets in just 19.3 overs. New Zealand’s captain, Mitchell Santner, acknowledged England’s exceptional performance, stating that they deserved credit for their victory.

At one point, New Zealand appeared to be in a strong position. However, the game shifted dramatically in the 18th over when Will Jacks scored 22 runs off Glenn Phillips’ over, turning the tide in England’s favor. Following the loss, Santner remarked, “It was a good and tough contest. Yes, I believe the way England chased the runs, particularly with Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed batting at the end, was outstanding.”

Had New Zealand managed to defeat England, they would have secured a direct ticket to the semifinals. Santner admitted that winning this match would have made things easier for New Zealand. He emphasized that England’s performance warranted their victory.

Santner noted that the team’s batsmen struggled to accumulate runs in the final overs, which ultimately cost them the match. He suggested that a target of 170 to 175 runs could have been more competitive. He also praised Rehan Ahmed’s impressive batting, highlighting his skill against spin bowling, which allowed him to perform well on that wicket.

At one stage, England had lost six wickets for just 117 runs, with New Zealand looking dominant. However, Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed formed an unbroken partnership of 44 runs in just 16 balls, completely reversing the match’s momentum. Jacks scored a powerful 32 runs off 18 balls, while Ahmed contributed an unbeaten 19 runs off just 7 balls.

Earlier, New Zealand posted a total of 159 runs, losing 7 wickets in their 20 overs. Glenn Phillips was the top scorer for the team with 39 runs, while Tim Seifert added 35 runs. On the bowling front, England’s Adil Rashid and Will Jacks each took two wickets.
