Birmingham, June 13: In a thrilling opener of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, host England triumphed over Sri Lanka by 87 runs, setting several remarkable records in the process.
Batting first, England scored 219 runs for the loss of just one wicket in their 20 overs, marking a historic achievement as they surpassed their own record of 213/5 set against Pakistan in 2023. Danielle Wyatt led the charge with an impressive unbeaten 105 runs off 62 balls, making her the third-highest run-scorer for England in Women’s T20 World Cup history. She has now overtaken Sarah Taylor, who previously held the record with 541 runs. Wyatt’s total now stands at 593 runs.
Additionally, Wyatt’s innings of 105 not out is the second-highest for England in the Women’s T20 World Cup, following Heather Knight’s record of 108 not out in 2020. The highest individual score in T20 World Cup history belongs to former Australian player Meg Lanning, who scored 126 runs.
Wyatt has also become the joint second-highest centurion in Women’s T20 World Cup history, with three centuries to her name. The record for the most centuries is held by UAE’s Isha Oja, who has five.
England’s batters capitalized on the final over, scoring 26 runs, making it the joint second-most expensive over in Women’s T20 World Cup history. Sri Lankan bowler Malika Madara was particularly targeted, conceding 51 runs for just one wicket in her four overs, marking the second-most expensive spell in the tournament’s history. The record for the most expensive over is held by India’s Shikha Pandey, who gave away 52 runs without taking a wicket in 2020.
For Sri Lanka, the partnership between Nilakshi de Silva and Malika Madara added 39 runs for the eighth wicket, setting a record for the highest partnership for eighth wicket or lower in Women’s T20 World Cup history. England’s Freya Kemp made a stunning debut, taking four wickets for just 21 runs, becoming only the third bowler to achieve this feat in a T20 World Cup debut match.
