
New Delhi, June 17: The second match of the ODI series between India and Afghanistan is set to take place on Wednesday at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. India has already clinched the first match, and with just one win, the host team can secure the series.
When examining the ODI history between India and Afghanistan, it’s clear that Team India holds a significant advantage. So far, five matches have been played between the two nations, and Afghanistan has yet to win a single game.
The first ODI match in this rivalry occurred on March 5, 2014, in Mirpur. In that Asia Cup match, India bowled Afghanistan out for just 159 runs in 45.2 overs and won the game by 8 wickets, finishing at 32.2 overs.
On September 25, 2018, another Asia Cup match was played in Dubai, which ended in a tie, with both teams scoring 252 runs. During the World Cup match on June 22, 2019, India managed to score 224/8 in their allotted overs, while Afghanistan fell short, being bowled out for 213 runs in 49.5 overs. India won by 11 runs.
In the World Cup encounter on October 11, 2023, Afghanistan set a target of 272 runs but lost by 8 wickets, as India chased down the target in just 35 overs. The first ODI series between the two countries commenced on June 13, 2026, which India won by 7 wickets. Due to rain, the match was reduced to 25 overs per side, with Afghanistan scoring 194 runs in 24.5 overs, while India successfully chased it down in 22.5 overs.
On this tour, Afghanistan has already lost a single Test match by an innings and 300 runs. If the visiting team loses the second ODI, they will lose the series as well.
