Southampton, June 16: In a disappointing turn of events for New Zealand, the team faced their second consecutive defeat in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. On Tuesday, Sri Lanka secured a 5-wicket victory against New Zealand. Following the match, New Zealand captain Amelia Kerr expressed her frustration over her team’s fielding performance. She acknowledged that mistakes, such as dropped catches, proved costly, despite the ‘White Ferns’ having enough runs to win.
Batting first, New Zealand posted a total of 150 runs, losing 6 wickets, thanks to contributions from captain Amelia Kerr (45) and Sophie Devine (45). In response, Sri Lanka chased down the target in just 19.4 overs. Nilakshika Silva played a crucial role with an unbeaten 54 runs, while Kaushani Nuthyangana added an important 24 runs.
Kerr believed that New Zealand had set a competitive score but lamented the weak fielding. She stated, “I felt the wicket was a bit slow. Considering the nature of their bowling attack and the relatively lower trajectory of the ball, I thought we had set a good score. We had enough runs to win the match. We wanted to score more, but once again, our fielding let us down.”
Sri Lanka’s victory was aided by smart running between the wickets and a strong finishing partnership of 48 runs off 28 balls between De Silva and Nuthyangana. Sri Lanka lost their first wicket at a score of 45 but quickly found themselves at 55 for 4. Kerr noted that these moments made a significant difference between the two teams.
Kerr remarked, “I thought they ran well between the wickets. That partnership at the end was crucial. If I could have batted a few more overs after getting out, I could have set a good platform for Sophie.”
After losing their second match in the T20 World Cup 2026, the pressure is mounting on New Zealand to defend their title. However, Kerr remains optimistic, believing there is still a chance for her team to bounce back, with three group matches remaining.
The captain emphasized, “We have three matches left. These are big games for us. We need to improve ourselves. The most important area for improvement is our fielding. Our batting is strong. We are bowling well in good areas. We are creating opportunities, but matches are won by catching, and our fielding has not been up to the mark.”
