Leeds, August 21: England triumphed over Pakistan in the first Test match, winning by an innings and 103 runs. The match took place at Headingley Cricket Ground, where Pakistan’s entire team was dismissed for just 135 runs in their second innings.
In response to Pakistan’s first innings score of 171, England amassed a formidable 409 runs, establishing a significant lead of 238 runs. Pakistan’s second innings began poorly, with Ajan Awais returning to the pavilion after scoring only 9 runs, while Imam-ul-Haq was dismissed without scoring.
Abdullah Shafique also struggled, contributing just 15 runs before being out. Shan Masood managed to score 29 runs before falling to Josh Tongue. Saud Shakeel could only muster 14 runs, and captain Salam Agha had a disappointing outing, scoring just 4 runs. Wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan managed 41 runs off 39 balls before being clean bowled by Gus Atkinson. Ali Usman and Khurram Shehzad added only 7 and 8 runs, respectively, with Shehzad falling to Ollie Robinson. Mohammad Abbas was dismissed for 6 runs by Jofra Archer.
In England’s bowling attack, Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue each claimed three wickets, while Jofra Archer also took three wickets.
Earlier, England’s first innings saw Harry Brook shine with a powerful 91 runs off 93 balls, while Jordan Cox contributed 73 runs. Captain Joe Root and Dan Lawrence also made significant contributions with scores of 66 and 51 runs, respectively. For Pakistan, Ali Usman took five wickets for 95 runs, and Khurram Shehzad secured three wickets.
After losing the toss and batting first, Pakistan could only manage 171 runs in their first innings. Abdullah Shafique was the top scorer for Pakistan with 61 runs, while Imam-ul-Haq added 42 runs. In England’s first innings, Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue each took five wickets. With this victory, England takes a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series.
