London, April 2: The England women’s cricket team has announced the appointment of Tom Smith as their new assistant coach ahead of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, set to commence on June 12. The former left-arm spinner has taken nearly 400 wickets across all formats during his professional career with Sussex, Surrey, Middlesex, and Gloucestershire.
Smith joins the coaching staff led by head coach Charlotte Edwards. The England women’s team has a busy international schedule ahead, including the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup on home soil, the first-ever women’s Test match at Lord’s, and white-ball series against New Zealand, India, and Ireland.
Expressing his excitement about the new role, Smith stated, “Coaching the England women’s team is a fantastic opportunity. I am incredibly eager to get started. This summer promises to be exceptional, featuring the World Cup on home ground and a T20 series against India. I will also return to Bristol for the T20 match against India, which will be a very special experience that I am looking forward to. I wish the players, staff, and supporters all the best for the upcoming summer and beyond.”
Head coach Charlotte Edwards added, “I am delighted that Tom is joining us as our spin bowling coach. He played professional cricket for nearly 20 years as a left-arm spinner, particularly with Gloucestershire, before starting his coaching career at the same county and working with the Birmingham Phoenix women’s team. Tom is highly respected in the game and was a very experienced white-ball bowler who will undoubtedly share his extensive knowledge with us. Our group of spin bowlers will greatly benefit from his skills and experience.”
Smith has a strong coaching background, beginning his coaching career in 2021 with Gloucestershire. He took on a dual role as a player/coach before assuming the position of assistant coach in 2025. Last year, he worked as an assistant coach with the Birmingham Phoenix women’s team during ‘The Hundred.’
