New Delhi, March 14: The Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Defense Minister Khadse, emphasized the critical role of sports journalism in transforming sports into compelling narratives. She highlighted the necessity of giving equal importance to sports beyond cricket. This statement was made during the inauguration of a four-day conference hosted by the Delhi Sports Journalists Association (DSJA).
In a post on her social media account, Khadse stated, “Sports journalism is the voice that turns sports into stories, athletes into icons, and sports into a source of national pride. I had the honor of addressing the SJFI Convention 2026, a historic gathering in the sports media world held after 23 years. Alongside me were Hari Ranjan Rao, Secretary (Sports), and Sarju Chakraborty, Director General of the Sports Authority of India, as well as Ramesh V, Secretary of the Sports Journalists Federation of India.”
Khadse further emphasized the need to spotlight sports other than cricket, promote government initiatives, enhance sports tourism, and explore career paths in emerging fields like sports science. She also stressed that journalism, as the fourth pillar of democracy, is essential for advancing social welfare, with sports media playing a vital role in showcasing India’s ‘soft power’ globally. Gender disparity in sports journalism was another significant issue she raised, advocating for greater female participation in the field. She expressed heartfelt appreciation for the unwavering support of sports journalists, whose dedication strengthens the entire sports ecosystem.
The event commenced traditionally with the lighting of a lamp, followed by the honoring of distinguished guests and collaborators. DSJA President Abhishek Tripathi presented an award to Khadse, while DSJA Secretary Sabi Hussain honored Hari Ranjan Rao. Khadse also recognized the SJFI President and Secretary, along with state presidents and secretaries from affiliated sports journalist associations across the country.
The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the JK Bose Inter-Zonal T20 Cricket Trophy and the AC Bali Table Tennis Trophy, marking the formal commencement of the conference’s sports competitions. Additionally, the draw for the JK Bose Inter-Zonal T20 Cricket Tournament was conducted, setting up two matches: South vs. East and West vs. North.
