Election Commission Appoints 11 Additional Police Observers for West Bengals Second Phase Polls

Kolkata, April 25: The Election Commission has taken significant steps to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for the second phase of assembly elections in West Bengal. Ahead of the voting scheduled for April 29, the Commission has announced the appointment of 11 additional police observers.

According to a source from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state, these observers have been called in from other states. Their primary aim is to reinforce security measures during the second phase, preventing any incidents of disruption or tension.

The source noted that despite stringent security during the first phase of voting on April 23, there were instances of minor violence and unrest. Keeping this in mind, the Commission aims to eliminate the possibility of such occurrences in the upcoming phase.

With the addition of these 11 new observers, the total number of police observers in the state has risen to 95. Initially, 84 observers were deployed for this election, which was already an increase compared to previous elections. Now, this number has been further enhanced for the second phase.

Sensitive areas have been identified, and instructions for increased monitoring have been issued. The responsibility for the safety of all new police observers has been entrusted to the state police.

In the meantime, the Election Commission has taken strict action by suspending five police officers from the Diamond Harbour police district in South 24 Parganas with immediate effect. They face allegations of negligence in duty, and departmental action has also been initiated against them.

The suspended officers include Additional Superintendent of Police Sandeep Garai (IPS), Sub-Divisional Police Officer Sajal Mandal, Inspector-in-Charge of Diamond Harbour Police Station Mousam Chakraborty, Inspector-in-Charge of Falta Police Station Ajay Bag, and Officer-in-Charge of Usti Police Station Sadhana Bag.

Additionally, the Commission has issued a stern warning to Ishani Pal, the Superintendent of Police for the Diamond Harbour police district, for failing to adequately supervise her subordinate officers.
