New Delhi, October 3 (Daily Kiran) : The Education Ministry has taken a significant step to promote the study of classical languages in India by approving five Centers of Excellence. This decision, announced through an official press release, aims to enhance research, preservation, and dissemination of India’s rich linguistic and literary heritage.
The Ministry’s higher education department has sanctioned these Centers for the study of Classical Assamese, Classical Bengali, Classical Marathi, Classical Pali, and Classical Prakrit. This initiative is expected to foster high-level academic research and provide institutional support for the preservation, digitization, and widespread dissemination of knowledge related to these classical languages.
These Centers will be established at five different higher education institutions: Classical Assamese at Tezpur University in Assam, Classical Bengali at Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal, Classical Marathi at Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute in Pune, Maharashtra, Classical Pali at Central University of Odisha, and Classical Prakrit at Central University of Gujarat.
The Ministry highlighted that the establishment of these five Centers is a crucial move towards strengthening the institutional ecosystem for the study, research, and preservation of India’s classical languages. This initiative will primarily focus on enhancing academic research and scholarship, preservation and digitization efforts, and the broad dissemination of classical language heritage.
These Centers will provide specialized institutional platforms for advanced research, scholarly work, and academic activities in the respective classical languages. They will also assist in the documentation, preservation, and digitization of linguistic and literary resources, contributing to the long-term safeguarding of India’s rich written heritage.
Located in Assam, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Gujarat, these Centers will strengthen the regional ecosystem for higher education, research, and scholarship in classical languages.
