Chennai, March 21: As the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approach, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has ramped up its efforts across the state to ensure transparency, accountability, and strict adherence to electoral regulations.
A large network of central observers has been deployed to monitor the electoral process and address complaints from the public, political parties, and candidates.
According to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Tamil Nadu, a total of 136 general observers, 40 police observers, and 151 expenditure observers have been assigned across all 234 assembly constituencies.
Their contact details have been shared through district election officers, allowing citizens and stakeholders to report any violations or complaints related to the elections directly.
Under stringent expenditure monitoring, enforcement agencies have increased surveillance statewide to curb illegal inducements such as cash distribution, alcohol, drugs, and free gifts.
As a result of these intensified operations, a total of ₹750.3 million has been seized as of March 21, 2026. The confiscated items include ₹237.4 million in cash, ₹5.1 million in alcohol, ₹56.3 million in drugs, ₹231.9 million in precious metals, and ₹219.6 million in other items and free gifts.
To streamline election-related processes, the ECI’s ‘Sewa’ portal plays a crucial role in facilitating candidates and political parties. This portal allows for online nomination submissions, booking time slots for nomination deposits, and applying for permissions related to public meetings, rallies, and other campaign activities.
So far, the platform has received 2,443 applications, of which 737 have been processed within the stipulated timeframe, while the remaining applications are under review. Candidates must submit a printout of their online application along with required documents to the returning officer.
Meanwhile, officials have urged all eligible voters to check their names on the voter list to ensure their participation in this democratic process. Citizens can view their status online or apply to include their names in the voter list through ‘Form-6’; applications can be submitted offline to election registration officers or online via digital platforms. The deadline for registering names in the voter list is March 26, 2026.
Officials have also highlighted supportive services such as the “Book a Call with BLO” feature and mobile applications to assist voters. Emphasizing public participation, the CEO reiterated that timely verification will help avoid last-minute issues and ensure a smooth electoral process across Tamil Nadu.
