DoT Extends SIM Binding Deadline to End of 2026

Mumbai, April 7: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has officially extended the deadline for the SIM binding mandate until the end of 2026. This regulation aims to curb digital crimes and scams by requiring users to re-login to their social media applications, such as WhatsApp, on secondary devices every few hours. Only the primary device linked to the user’s SIM will remain logged in permanently.

Previously, the government set March 30, 2026, as the implementation deadline, a timeline first announced in November 2025. However, as reported by MoneyControl, this deadline has now been pushed back to the end of this year. This continuous re-logging requirement is expected to create challenges and inconvenience for users.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp and Facebook, is currently in talks with the DoT to develop a technically feasible solution. WhatsApp boasts over 400 million active users in India, many of whom access their accounts on multiple devices.
