New Delhi, August 29: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has reported a significant achievement through its citizen-centric initiative, the Communication Partner Portal. In July 2026, the portal facilitated the recovery of 77,692 lost or stolen mobile handsets. This marks the first time that the number of recovered devices in a single month has surpassed 75,000, according to a statement from the Ministry of Communications.
Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia praised this accomplishment, attributing it to the growing public trust in the Communication Partner platform and the strong coordination among the DoT, telecom service providers, and police forces across various states and union territories.
The ministry stated that the DoT is continuously working to enhance this system by gathering feedback from stakeholders, aiming to improve the recovery rates of lost or stolen mobile devices.
The success can be largely credited to the DoT’s Digital Intelligence Unit and its regional offices, which collaborated with local police to locate mobile devices and return them to their rightful owners. Data indicates a remarkable 201% increase in monthly mobile recoveries from April 2025 to July 2026.
To make the system more transparent and user-friendly, several new improvements have been implemented. Citizens now receive mobile tracing reports along with information about the relevant police station via SMS, email, and the portal.
Additionally, information regarding the use of new SIM cards in stolen or lost mobiles is also provided to the police, enhancing the chances of tracking and recovering the devices. In many cases, alternative mobile numbers are shared with investigative agencies.
The ministry also noted that once a mobile device is recovered, users are advised via SMS to perform a factory reset to ensure protection against potential malware or unauthorized software.
Any citizen can easily register information about their lost or stolen mobile phone through the Communication Partner Portal. This service is available on both the web portal and mobile app. Once a complaint is registered, the corresponding mobile device is blocked on the Indian telecommunications network to prevent misuse.
If someone attempts to use the blocked mobile, the network identifies it, and alerts are sent to the respective citizen and police station, expediting the recovery process and return to the rightful owner.
