Chapel Hill, September 3: Alex Karp, CEO of the American software and data analytics firm Palantir Technologies, has stated that India has the potential to emerge as a significant player in artificial intelligence (AI). He highlighted the country’s technical talent, initiatives in the energy sector, and its capacity to develop advanced AI models as key factors contributing to this potential.
In a recent interview, when asked about India’s future in AI, Karp expressed optimism, saying, “I believe India can perform very well in this field.” He emphasized that model development, energy resources, and technical expertise are crucial for AI advancement. “You are taking many creative and practical steps to ensure energy availability,” he noted.
Karp underscored the importance of energy and technical knowledge in AI development. He pointed out that significant challenges in AI include energy supply and technical talent. Each country, he said, has unique technical capabilities and should progress based on those strengths.
He described AI as one of the most significant technological advancements of the past century, potentially the most important achievement in the last 100 years. However, he cautioned that AI can be used for both beneficial and harmful purposes, making expert oversight essential. “Every country must develop independent and indigenous AI systems tailored to its needs,” he added.
Karp remarked, “The most interesting aspect of this conference is that every country must decide how to develop and control its own AI system.” He posed critical questions: “How do you control the weights? How do you manage the data? How do you ensure it belongs to your own country?” Countries need to find answers to these questions.
Currently, Karp noted that the leading nations in AI are the United States, China, and Israel. He stated, “The U.S., China, and Israel are currently at the forefront, but it is also crucial for other countries to develop their AI capabilities and use them wisely.”
Organizations utilizing AI require not only computing power but also systems that determine which data is used in which models. “You need computing capacity, an application layer, and to decide where to use open models and where to use closed models to protect sensitive information and government privacy,” he explained.
Karp mentioned that Palantir’s platform can collaborate with AI models developed by various companies. He noted that while his company prioritizes American technologies, it also supports healthy competition in the business market.
“We must win this competition, and American models should be the best. However, it is not enough to simply state that people should use our models if they are expensive and not superior,” he said.
He advised governments to exercise caution when creating AI-related regulations. While regulations are necessary, they should be crafted by individuals who have a deep understanding of the technology.
Palantir Technologies, co-founded by Karp in 2003, develops platforms that assist government agencies and private companies in connecting and analyzing large-scale data. The company is particularly known for its work with U.S. defense and intelligence agencies, while also providing software solutions in manufacturing, healthcare, energy, and financial services.
