Chennai, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : A delegation of DMK legislators, led by Assembly Whip E.V. Velu, met with Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar on Tuesday to file a privilege breach complaint against Law Minister Nirmal Kumar. The lawmakers allege that Kumar provided false information during Assembly proceedings.
During the meeting, the legislators also inquired about a previous petition requesting the removal of comments made by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay regarding the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) from the Assembly records. The DMK expressed concerns that these remarks disrespected the former Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.
Speaking to reporters after their meeting, the legislators emphasized that making derogatory comments about the former Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition violates Assembly rules. They argued that accusations should not be directed at individuals who are not present to defend themselves in the House.
The delegation has already submitted a memorandum requesting the removal of the Chief Minister’s comments on MISA from the proceedings. They urged the Speaker to clarify the actions taken regarding this request and called for a prompt decision.
The DMK’s new privilege complaint is based on allegations that the Law Minister misled the Assembly with incorrect information. The legislators contend that providing false information to the Assembly breaches its rules and privileges.
They mentioned that a privilege committee has been formed and expressed hope that their complaint will be forwarded to the committee for investigation. The committee may recommend further action after reviewing the allegations and relevant Assembly records.
The legislators accused the government of distracting the public by repeatedly raising baseless and malicious issues. They claimed that the cabinet relies on factually unfounded disputes instead of addressing legitimate concerns raised by the opposition.
This meeting adds another layer to the ongoing conflict between the ruling AIADMK and the DMK within the Assembly. The Speaker has yet to announce a decision regarding the previous petition to remove the Chief Minister’s remarks on MISA and the privilege complaint against the Law Minister. The DMK stated it will wait for the Speaker’s response before deciding on further action.
