New Delhi, 16 August (Kiran News) – Women’s World Cup champion Divya Deshmukh confirmed on Friday that she will participate in the upcoming FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 chess tournament’s Open section. This prestigious tournament is set to begin on 3 September.

The 19-year-old wrote on her Instagram story, “So, the news I shared yesterday is that I am playing in the Open Grand Swiss this year.”
Recently, Divya participated in the Women’s Speed Chess Championship, which was her first tournament after her historic FIDE World Cup title. There, she faced a tough quarterfinal defeat against world number one Hou Yifan.
Several top Indian names will compete in the Open section, including world champion D. Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, R. Praggnanandhaa, Vidit Gujrathi, Pentala Harikrishna, and Nihal Sarin. In the women’s section, India’s 2025 World Cup runner-up Koneru Humpy and R. Vaishali will play.
Interestingly, Russia’s Alexandra Goryachkina will also participate in the Open section. Both Divya and Goryachkina had requested wild cards, which have been accepted. Although this tournament is also a qualifier for the FIDE Women’s Candidates, both players have already secured their places.
Meanwhile, International Master and renowned chess commentator Tania Sachdev recently stated that women players should aim to play more open tournaments to improve themselves. However, she also emphasized that special women’s titles should not be discontinued.
Tania said, “I believe young girls should play as many open tournaments as possible. They should train and compete against male players, not just focus on women’s events. But at the same time, women’s titles must remain, as they are the aspiration of many and inspire new generations to take up the sport.”
