Mumbai, March 30: The Mumbai Indians (MI) kicked off their campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 with a resounding victory. On Sunday, they defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by six wickets, marking their first win in an IPL season opener since 2012. Captain Hardik Pandya expressed the team’s relief and excitement about finally securing a win in their first match of the season.
Pandya stated, “Clearly, we have been waiting a long time to win the first match of the season. We always aim to start the season on a high note. The entire team is thrilled that we managed to do so.”
Batting first at Wankhede Stadium, KKR scored 220 runs, losing four wickets. In response, MI chased down the target in just 19.1 overs, finishing with six wickets in hand.
Commenting on the successful chase, Pandya remarked, “In modern cricket, anything is possible. We assessed how the pitch was playing. Credit goes to the bowlers for not allowing KKR to score 240-250 runs. Such targets can be challenging, but 220 is always chaseable. Rohit and Ryan Rickelton were outstanding. Ryan performed exceptionally well for us last year.”
On the other hand, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane reflected on the loss, saying, “I felt that a score of 220-225 was a good total. We batted really well, but our bowling attack lacked experience. Playing against a strong batting lineup like Mumbai Indians offers a significant learning opportunity for us. Besides Vaibhav, Karthik, and Mujarbani, who are not accustomed to the IPL environment, we had two experienced spinners, but I believe Mumbai Indians batted excellently. Our bowlers will definitely learn from this.”
Regarding KKR’s bowling, Rahane mentioned, “I think when Green starts bowling soon, the team’s combination will change a bit. We need to find the right balance with players who can bowl effectively for us. While we batted well, achieving the right balance with our bowling is crucial.”
Rahane also noted that he experienced cramping during the match but hopes to recover quickly. Playing in Mumbai’s humid conditions proved to be quite challenging.
