Guwahati, March 29: Assam Minister Piyush Hazarika launched a sharp attack on Congress’s electoral promises on Sunday. He accused the opposition party of merely copying welfare schemes implemented by the BJP government under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
In a post on the social media platform X, Hazarika stated that several key initiatives promoted by Assam Congress, such as Orunodoi, Mission Basundhara, and the Chief Minister’s Women Entrepreneurship Scheme, were originally conceived and executed by the current government.
Targeting the opposition, he questioned Congress’s credibility, pointing out that for the past five years, the party has accused the BJP government of creating beneficiaries through loans.
Hazarika asked why voters should trust a party that promises to continue the very schemes it once criticized, instead of presenting alternative plans. He expressed doubts about the financial viability of Congress’s promises, stating that if the party were to come to power, it would struggle to explain how it would fund these initiatives. He raised concerns about whether Assam would be pushed into a situation similar to Himachal Pradesh.
The minister highlighted a key difference between the BJP and Congress, mentioning the BJP’s commitment to reclaiming five lakh bighas of encroached land.
Hazarika accused Congress of deliberately sidestepping this issue due to its vote bank politics, claiming that illegal encroachers form the party’s primary support base.
Claiming public support for the BJP’s governance model, he asserted that Congress’s manifesto clearly shows there is no alternative to the BJP’s vision of a developed and secure Assam.
