CSK Faces Another Setback Ahead of IPL 2026 Opener as Dewald Brevis Injured

New Delhi, March 29: The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are grappling with challenges as they prepare for their first match in the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026). Following the injury of former captain MS Dhoni, the team has suffered another significant blow with Dewald Brevis ruled out. He will not participate in the match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) scheduled for March 30 in Guwahati.

CSK’s head coach, Stephen Fleming, confirmed Brevis’s absence due to a rib strain, preventing him from playing in the season opener.

Brevis is a crucial component of CSK’s middle order and is known for his ability to score quickly. His absence is a major setback for the team.

CSK has already faced multiple player injuries in IPL 2026. Fast bowler Nathan Ellis is out for the entire season due to injury. MS Dhoni is also unavailable for the first two weeks of the season due to a calf strain. Spencer Johnson, who was brought in to replace Ellis, is recovering from his own injury and is expected to join the team around April 21-23.

With both Dhoni and Brevis sidelined, Karthik Sharma and Prashant Veer, who were acquired for ₹14.2 crores in the December auction, may make their debuts. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has confirmed that he will open alongside Sanju Samson, leaving Ayush Mhatre, Sarfaraz Khan, and Urvil Patel as alternative options for batting at number 3 or lower.

After a disappointing performance last season, where they finished at the bottom of the points table, CSK aims to improve in IPL 2026. However, injuries to key players have complicated their efforts.
