Divine Display at Ujjains Mahakaleshwar Temple During Bhasma Aarti

Ujjain, May 18: The world-renowned Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain witnessed a grand Bhasma Aarti on the second day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha. Devotees were mesmerized by the divine appearance of Baba Mahakal adorned with bhang.

Devotees from across the country and abroad lined up from the night before to participate in the Bhasma Aarti.

As per daily tradition, the temple doors were opened at dawn after seeking permission from Lord Veerabhadra. The moment the doors opened, the air was filled with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” Due to it being Monday, a significant influx of devotees was observed, accompanied by the sounds of bells, conch shells, and chanting of mantras.

Following this, the Mahavir Akhara performed the first water offering to Baba, followed by a ceremonial bath with Panchamrit. After the abhishekam, a grand Bhasma Aarti took place, where ashes were offered to Baba, and the Aarti was sung. During this time, Mahakal reveals his form to the devotees, transitioning from the formless to the manifested.

The concept of Baba Mahakal’s transition from ‘Nirakar’ (formless) to ‘Sakar’ (manifested) signifies the spiritual and philosophical transformation of Shiva, where the infinite, formless, and omnipresent Supreme Being appears in a specific and worshipable form for the welfare of devotees.

Today’s adornment of Baba was exceptionally divine and captivating. The face of Mahakal was beautifully decorated, featuring a clear tripund and two moons on his forehead. Additionally, Baba was adorned with a new crown and floral garlands. Fresh bilva leaves were offered, and the entire decoration was enhanced with vibrant flower garlands.

The religious significance of the Bhasma Aarti is considered extremely special. It involves the use of ashes from various trees such as Gohari, Peepal, Palash, Shami, and Bel. It is believed that during this time, Lord Mahakal is in his formless state. Therefore, women are not allowed to view the Bhasma Aarti directly and must cover their faces with a veil or dupatta.
