Ujjain, August 12: The early morning of Hariyali Amavasya, which falls on the new moon of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Sawan, witnessed a divine and enchanting scene at the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple. On this special occasion, Baba Mahakal was adorned with a garland of green bhang leaves and belpatra, enhancing the sacred atmosphere with a unique decoration.
Long queues of devotees began forming outside the temple late at night. Thousands of worshippers waited throughout the night for a glimpse of their beloved Baba Mahakal. Following temple tradition, the priests sought the permission of Lord Veerabhadra before opening the sanctum doors at exactly 3 AM, accompanied by the sounds of drums and conch shells.
Before the Bhasma Aarti, the priests performed a water and Panchamrit abhishekam for Baba. He was then decorated with fresh green bhang leaves and adorned with a garland of belpatra. This special decoration reflects the significance of the Sawan month and Hariyali Amavasya, symbolizing nature, prosperity, and the natural form of Lord Shiva.
As the divine form of Baba was revealed amidst the sounds of bells, conch shells, and Vedic chants, the devotees were overwhelmed with emotion, filling the temple complex with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” After the Bhasma Aarti, devotees were allowed to have darshan of Baba Mahakal in the sanctum. It is believed that worshipping Lord Shiva on Hariyali Amavasya brings happiness and prosperity to homes.
Due to the Sawan month, the number of devotees at the temple was significantly higher than on regular days. The temple committee and administration made extensive arrangements for security and darshan. Additional barricading and volunteers were deployed to ensure smooth movement in the queues.
