Kanpur, September 2: A disturbing incident has unfolded in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where a woman was murdered following a robbery. Reports indicate that the assailants fled after placing the victim’s body on a chair. The crime came to light late at night when a tenant arrived to turn on the water motor.
The deceased has been identified as Uma Kushwaha. Police suspect that the criminals may have been familiar with the household, as they seemed to know where valuables were stored. Uma’s body was discovered inside the house, positioned on a chair, with visible marks around her neck. Additionally, various items were scattered throughout the home, suggesting a search for valuables.
However, investigators and forensic teams found no clear signs of forced entry, leading them to believe that the perpetrators might have had detailed knowledge of the family and their home.
Shivmangal Kushwaha, a resident of Keshavpuram, operates a book stall in Maswanpur and lived with his wife, Uma. On Tuesday night, around 8 PM, the tenant arrived to turn on the water motor and noticed Uma sitting on the chair. After calling out to her multiple times without a response, the tenant informed Shivmangal.
When Shivmangal returned home, he initially thought his wife had suffered a medical emergency. Upon closer inspection, he noticed a dark bruise around her neck. The disarray in the room led him to suspect that a robbery had occurred, followed by murder. Their elder son, Amrish, has a house in Maswanpur, while their younger son, Ashish, works as a senior technician at the Ministry of Health in Delhi.
Upon receiving the report, the Rawatpur police and forensic teams arrived at the scene around 11 PM. They collected evidence and interviewed family members. The police also reviewed footage from nearby CCTV cameras. Initial investigations revealed that the incident likely occurred between 5 PM and 6 PM.
The investigation team believes that the assailants knew where the key to the elder son’s wardrobe was located. According to police, only Amrish’s wardrobe was found broken into, while Ashish’s remained untouched. Shivmangal informed the police that the wardrobe contained jewelry belonging to his wife and Amrish’s wife, Neha.
It is reported that the key to the wardrobe was kept inside a safe in the house. Authorities indicated that the wardrobe was likely opened with a key, while the safe containing the jewelry was broken into with a sharp object.
Speaking to reporters, DCP West SM Qasim Abdi stated, “The body has been taken into custody and sent for post-mortem. We are examining the CCTV footage from the area. Initial investigations show no signs or evidence of forced entry into the house.”
Meanwhile, tenant Sapna Gupta shared her account of the events. She mentioned that the family grew concerned when Uma did not respond to repeated phone calls.
Sapna said, “Around 7 PM, when it was time to turn on the water, my husband called Auntie to start the water, but there was no response. Then her husband called, and still, there was no answer. After that, my husband informed Uncle that Auntie was not picking up her phone. When the call connected, Uncle asked us to open the door and check. When my husband pushed the door open, we found her in this (deceased) condition.”
