New Delhi, March 19: In today’s world, screen time has surged beyond physical activity. This shift has led many to face various health issues. Instead of wasting time on gadgets at the start of the day, dedicating a few moments to calming breathing exercises can significantly enhance both mental and physical health.
One such simple and effective practice is Bhramari, known as “Humming Bee Breathing” in English. This technique calms the mind within minutes and provides positive energy for the entire day.
The name Bhramari is derived from a black bee found in India, also known as the bumblebee. During this practice, a humming sound, reminiscent of the bumblebee, is produced while exhaling, which is why it is called Bhramari.
Bhramari is part of the Ashta Kumbhaka breathing techniques. Ashta Kumbhaka refers to eight specific and advanced methods of pranayama, described in the ancient yoga text, Hatha Yoga Pradipika. The primary aim of these techniques is to awaken the body’s subtle energy and enhance breathing capacity.
The Ministry of AYUSH in India has highlighted the benefits of practicing Bhramari pranayama, especially for those struggling with mental health issues. It is also essential for the well-being of both children and adults.
According to the ministry, the term ‘Bhramari’ is derived from ‘Bhramara.’ The sound produced during this pranayama resembles the buzzing of a bumblebee, which is why it is named so. This calming exercise is highly effective in reducing stress, anxiety, anger, and mental hyperactivity.
Experts suggest that the resonating effect of the bumblebee-like sound impacts the brain and nervous system. It can be beneficial in alleviating stress-related disorders such as insomnia, high blood pressure, and anxiety. Regular practice enhances concentration and serves as an excellent preparation for meditation.
