New Delhi, March 17: In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, a lack of proper nutrition and exercise has led to weakened muscles. This has resulted in common issues such as back pain, weakness, and digestive problems. Mayurasana, a powerful yoga pose, is believed to help alleviate these physical ailments.
The term ‘Mayurasana’ is derived from Sanskrit, combining ‘Mayur,’ meaning ‘peacock,’ and ‘asana,’ which translates to ‘posture.’ When performed, the body resembles the elegant stance of a peacock.
The Ministry of AYUSH in India has emphasized the significance of this pose. It is considered an advanced arm-balancing yoga practice that maintains balance like a peacock. During this pose, the body’s weight is supported on the palms while maintaining equilibrium. The body is lifted off the ground, with elbows positioned close to the abdomen and legs extended straight behind.
Regular practice of Mayurasana enhances both physical and mental strength, improves concentration, and boosts overall body stability. However, beginners may find it somewhat challenging. It is advisable to practice foundational poses such as Plank, Chaturanga Dandasana, and Bakasana to strengthen the wrists and arms before attempting Mayurasana. Additionally, beginners should practice under the supervision of a yoga instructor to avoid injuries to the wrists or shoulders.
To perform Mayurasana, start by kneeling and bringing your toes together behind you. Lean forward and place both palms on the ground, fingers pointing towards your feet. Bend your elbows and rest them on either side of your abdomen. Gradually shift your body weight onto your hands while extending your legs straight back. Exhale as you lift your head and legs, keeping your body parallel to the ground. Initially, hold the pose for 20-30 seconds and gradually increase the duration.
While the benefits of this yoga pose are numerous, individuals with high blood pressure, hernias, heart disease, or stomach ulcers should avoid practicing it.
