New Delhi, August 18: Yoga is an ancient practice that promotes physical health while connecting the mind and spirit. Among its many postures, Ustrasana, or Camel Pose, stands out as a simple yet highly effective asana. Practicing Ustrasana can alleviate various physical issues, enhance concentration, and foster mental tranquility.
The term ‘Ustr’ comes from Sanskrit, meaning ‘camel.’ Ustrasana is an intermediate backbend that opens the Anahata (heart chakra). This pose increases flexibility, strengthens the body, and boosts digestive power.
According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Ustrasana not only improves physical health but also benefits mental well-being. This yoga posture is known to enhance eyesight, relieve back and neck pain, reduce belly fat, and strengthen the digestive system. Ustrasana makes the spine flexible and enhances cardiovascular and respiratory health.
The ministry also outlines the correct way to practice Ustrasana. Begin by sitting in Vajrasana or kneeling, keeping your feet hip-width apart. Gradually lean backward and grasp your heels with your hands. Tilt your head back and lift your chest. Hold this position for 20-30 seconds while breathing normally. Then, slowly return to the starting position and relax.
Practicing Ustrasana energizes the body and improves flexibility. However, it is crucial to perform it correctly and with caution. Individuals with severe back pain, hernias, high or low blood pressure, or recent surgeries should avoid this pose without consulting a doctor. It should be practiced on an empty stomach, and one should avoid overstretching. Beginners are advised to start under the supervision of a yoga instructor. Pregnant women should refrain from this asana.
