Mumbai, April 6: Dilip Vengsarkar is one of India’s most celebrated batsmen, known for his exceptional performances on foreign soil. He made history as the first overseas player to score three consecutive centuries at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. Throughout his career, he achieved numerous milestones.
Born on April 6, 1956, in Rajapur, Maharashtra, Dilip showed a keen interest in cricket from a young age. He quickly decided to pursue a career in the sport. By the age of 19, while playing for Rest of India in the Irani Trophy, his batting caught the attention of legendary cricketer Lala Amarnath. Impressed by his style, Amarnath remarked during a radio commentary that Dilip played like Colonel C.K. Nayudu, earning him the nickname ‘Colonel.’ In that match, he hit impressive shots against bowlers like Madan Lal, Bishan Singh Bedi, and Irapalli.
Dilip’s outstanding performance in the Irani Cup opened the doors to the Indian national team within a year. He made his international Test debut on January 24 in New Zealand. From that point onward, he never looked back. His remarkable batting soon made him a key player for India, especially on foreign pitches, where he excelled, particularly at Lord’s.
In four Test matches at Lord’s, Dilip scored 508 runs at an impressive average of 72. He not only excelled against England but also scored centuries against formidable bowling attacks from the West Indies, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Over his Test career, Dilip played 116 matches, amassing 6,868 runs at an average of 42, including 17 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut in 1976 against New Zealand, playing a total of 129 ODIs and scoring 3,508 runs at an average of 34.
Dilip was part of the Indian team that won the World Cup in 1983, although he did not play in every match of the tournament. He suffered a severe injury from a bouncer by Malcolm Marshall during a match against the West Indies, which resulted in a broken jaw. In 1987, he was appointed captain of the Indian team after Kapil Dev, but his captaincy record was not particularly strong, leading to a swift change in leadership. He captained the team in 18 ODIs and 10 Tests.
Dilip was honored with the Arjuna Award in 1981 and received the Padma Shri in 1987. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also recognized his contributions with the Colonel Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award.
