New Delhi, May 30: The government announced on Saturday that the Digi Yatra app has successfully facilitated over 100 million seamless and paperless journeys. The app has been downloaded more than 24 million times on both iOS and Android platforms.
Thanks to this platform, the average entry time at airports has decreased from 15 seconds to just 5 seconds per passenger. Currently, Digi Yatra is operational at 38 airports across the country, with plans to add 27 more airports next year.
The efficient movement of passengers has led to better utilization of terminal infrastructure, reducing congestion at airports and reliance on manual processes. According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Digi Yatra has become one of the most successful digital initiatives in the global aviation sector.
The elimination of physical boarding passes is also contributing to environmental conservation, saving thousands of sheets of paper daily at participating airports.
Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu congratulated the Digi Yatra team for reaching the milestone of 100 million users. He stated, “This achievement reflects that passengers are increasingly trusting a seamless, paperless, and contactless travel system. The acceptance of Digi Yatra comes at a time when air travel in the country is rapidly increasing. In 2014, the daily number of domestic air passengers was less than 200,000, but in the last three years, this figure has frequently exceeded 500,000.”
The minister added that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to make air travel more accessible and convenient, the annual passenger count at Indian airports is projected to reach 500 million by 2030 and nearly 1 billion by 2040.
He further explained, “To effectively manage this rapid growth, we are working on adopting several digital technologies, including Digi Yatra, self-baggage drop facilities, air traffic control automation systems, a grievance redressal air service portal, and AI-based digital twins to enhance airport operations.”
Naidu noted that while many countries are still evaluating the large-scale implementation of biometric-based passenger processes, India has successfully implemented and expanded Digi Yatra in a short time.
He also mentioned that the major greenfield airports set to open this year—Navi Mumbai, Jewar, and Bhogapuram—will be fully Digi Yatra-enabled.
Currently, Digi Yatra supports 11 languages, with plans to add 11 more regional languages by the end of this year.
