Devotees Brave Severe Cold to Welcome New Year at Golden Temple

Chandigarh/Amritsar, 1 January: Despite the biting cold, hundreds of devotees gathered early Thursday morning at the Golden Temple in Amritsar and other religious sites in Punjab to welcome the New Year with prayers.

Faithful lined up from midnight to offer prayers inside the Golden Temple. Long queues were seen outside the temple early on Thursday, as people patiently waited for their turn to enter the sacred premises of Harmandir Sahib.

Many devotees were also seen taking holy dips in the sacred Sarovar of the Golden Temple. Kavita Gupta, a devotee from Delhi, expressed that praying at the Golden Temple on the first day of the year is truly a blessing. She wished that 2026 be filled with fulfilled prayers and achieved goals.

Alongside, large crowds thronged the Mata Mansa Devi temple near Panchkula, Chandigarh, to offer their prayers.

People across Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh participated in worship at various religious places on the occasion of the New Year.

Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria extended heartfelt greetings to the people of Punjab and Chandigarh on the New Year. In his message, he highlighted that the New Year is welcomed with fresh hopes, aspirations, and expectations. He emphasised that these can only be realised through collective efforts fueled by enthusiasm, determination, and dedication.

Kataria urged the people to renew their commitment towards building a strong, peaceful, and united India and dedicating themselves once again to the nation’s progress and prosperity. He wished everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year.

Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan also conveyed New Year greetings, praying that the Almighty fulfils all dreams of Punjabis in 2026. He wished happiness, peace, success, and prosperity for Punjabis living around the world.

He encouraged people to maintain their health by exercising regularly.

Extending his New Year wishes, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann prayed that the Almighty fills everyone’s lives with happiness and success. In an ex-post message, he stated that last year his government worked to provide better health facilities, quality education for children, and employment for youth in Punjab.

The Chief Minister added that strict action was taken to remove the blights of drugs and corruption from Punjab. He assured that development work will continue.
