Kathmandu, August 26: The recent floods in Nepal have severely impacted nine commercial bank branches. The Nepal Bankers Association reported that they have been unable to contact approximately 26 employees working at these branches in Rasuwa. Communication issues have arisen due to damaged telephone lines and power outages.
According to the association, the affected banks include Machhapuchhre, Nabil, Sanima, Laxmi Sunrise, Himalayan, Prabhu, Global IME, Investment Mega, and NMBA Bank. Santosh Koirala, the association’s president, stated that contact with these employees remains unestablished.
Early Wednesday, the water level of the Bhote Koshi River surged unexpectedly, leading to widespread flooding. Numerous bridges, projects, and buildings collapsed in the disaster. Local media reports indicate that a total of 25 bodies have been recovered so far, including one in Rasuwa, seven in Nuwakot (three women and four men), six in Dhading (three women, two men, and one unidentified person), and four in Gorkha (two men and two unidentified individuals). Additionally, six bodies were found along the banks of the Trishuli River in Gorkha. Police confirmed the recovery of a body near the Trishuli River in Gandaki Rural Municipality-8.
Authorities are evacuating residents from flood-affected homes to safer locations. They are conducting essential rescue and search operations in collaboration with various agencies and local volunteers, while also clearing obstructions on multiple routes.
To aid in the relief efforts, 49 rescue flights have been dispatched from Kathmandu Airport to the flood-affected areas in Rasuwa. As of 5:20 PM on Wednesday, both private and government helicopters have been delivering aid to Dhunche, Timure, Syafrubesi, Malung, Trishuli, and Dhading.
In response to this crisis, India has assured its full support to the neighboring nation. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with his Nepali counterpart, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, stating, “In this challenging time, the people of India stand in solidarity with their brothers and sisters in Nepal. India is ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance. Our teams are working together for rescue and relief operations.”
