New Delhi, August 26: Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has expressed deep concern over the catastrophic floods in Nepal. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this tragedy.
In a post on the social media platform X, Gandhi stated, “I am deeply worried about the devastating floods in Nepal, where hundreds, including Indian pilgrims, are reported missing. My sincere sympathies go out to those who have lost their loved ones, and my thoughts are with the families anxiously awaiting news about their missing relatives.”
He urged the Indian government to work closely with Nepali authorities to locate the missing Indian citizens and ensure their safe return. “I stand in solidarity with the people of Nepal and all those affected by this disaster,” he added.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Nepal’s Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, expressing sorrow over the devastation caused by the flash floods. Modi assured that India would provide every possible assistance to the neighboring nation during this crisis.
The Prime Minister shared this information via an official post on X, stating, “I spoke with Prime Minister Dahal and expressed my condolences for the loss of life and property due to the floods in Nepal. At this difficult time, the people of India stand with their brothers and sisters in Nepal. India is ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance. Our teams are working together for rescue and relief operations.”
Additionally, the Indian Embassy in Nepal has released emergency helpline numbers for information regarding Indian citizens. The two helpline numbers are +9779851316807 and +9779709107500.
On Wednesday morning, the water level of the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa, Nepal, suddenly rose, engulfing the banks in floodwaters. According to the Nepal Tourism Department, a total of 384 travelers are reported missing, including 291 foreign nationals, among whom are 105 Indian citizens.
The department has provided data from various tourism agencies, indicating that 59 Indians are missing from one location and 46 from another.
In light of the situation, the department has issued an advisory urging caution. As a precaution, the traffic police in the Kathmandu Valley have halted vehicles traveling from Kathmandu to Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Chitwan.
Travelers are advised to refrain from heading towards the disaster-affected areas until official confirmation is received regarding the safety of road conditions.
