New Delhi, October 11 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi government’s electric vehicle (EV) policy, launched on July 1, 2026, is receiving an enthusiastic response. As of October 8, 2026, the initiative has attracted 7,782 applications for incentives, with ₹7.91 crore already disbursed to 2,731 beneficiaries. This surge in interest highlights the growing acceptance of electric vehicles in the capital.
Officials stated that the policy is a crucial step toward reducing air pollution, promoting clean transportation, and transforming Delhi into a greener, more sustainable city. The majority of the applications received fall under electric two-wheelers, with 7,706 applications specifically for these vehicles.
Data reveals that ₹7.61 crore has been allocated as purchase incentives to 2,707 beneficiaries. Additionally, those scrapping old vehicles to purchase new EVs have benefited from a scrapping incentive of ₹29.50 lakh, which has been claimed by 79 individuals.
The policy offers subsidies for various categories of electric vehicles. In the first year, electric two-wheelers priced up to ₹2.25 lakh are eligible for subsidies of up to ₹30,000, depending on battery capacity. Separate incentives have also been established for electric three-wheelers, freight vehicles, and other categories, aiming to attract more residents to switch to electric mobility.
To further encourage the removal of polluting vehicles, the policy includes scrapping incentives. Individuals who surrender old, Delhi-registered vehicles at authorized scrapping facilities and purchase new electric vehicles within six months can receive additional benefits. For instance, scrapping an old BS-IV two-wheeler to buy a new electric model can yield ₹10,000. Similarly, scrapping an old car for a new electric vehicle priced up to ₹30 lakh can provide up to ₹1 lakh in incentives, while scrapping an old freight vehicle for an electric goods vehicle can offer up to ₹50,000.
A key feature of the policy is the 100% exemption from road tax and registration fees for eligible electric vehicles. This benefit is available for electric cars priced up to ₹30 lakh until March 31, 2030, significantly reducing the overall cost of purchasing electric vehicles.
Furthermore, the government has introduced special provisions to promote electric vehicles in logistics and freight sectors. The first 1,000 N2 category private electric trucks registered in Delhi will be exempt from no-entry time restrictions for ten years, potentially accelerating the use of electric freight vehicles in the city.
Officials assert that incentivizing electric vehicles will decrease reliance on fossil fuels, reduce pollution, and foster a cleaner transportation system. The increasing number of applications indicates a readiness among residents to embrace electric mobility.
