New Delhi, June 23: A massive fire broke out in the Valmiki Basti area of Takiya Kale Khan, located behind Maulana Azad Medical College. At least 30 shanties were completely engulfed in flames, along with a significant amount of plywood, wood, and other flammable materials.
Officials reported that despite the intensity of the fire, there were no casualties or injuries due to the swift response from emergency services and police personnel.
According to authorities, a PCR call about the fire was received around 11:32 PM on Monday night. Local police teams arrived promptly to assess the situation and initiate rescue and evacuation efforts.
The fierce blaze consumed a large stockpile of old furniture, wood, plywood, and other highly combustible materials stored in the area. The flames spread rapidly, posing a serious threat to nearby shanties and residents in the densely populated vicinity.
Police officers quickly launched an evacuation operation, alerting local residents about the dangers posed by the rapidly spreading fire. Despite some residents’ reluctance to leave their homes and belongings, police continued their efforts to relocate people to safety.
Through their quick intervention, police teams successfully evacuated the entire sensitive area, rescuing 12 individuals, including several family members.
The incident was reported to the fire department, BSES, and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), which quickly understood the severity of the situation and deployed emergency resources to the site.
Officials stated that a total of 20 fire engines were deployed to combat the blaze, while nine CAT ambulances were present on-site as a precaution to provide immediate medical assistance if needed.
Additional reserve police personnel also arrived at the scene to assist with evacuation efforts, crowd control measures, and to maintain clear access routes for fire tenders, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles.
Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control after nearly three hours, with operations continuing throughout the night.
According to officials, the timely evacuation of residents, rapid deployment of firefighting resources, and effective coordination among all agencies ensured that, despite the fire’s devastation and extensive property damage, there were no fatalities or injuries. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
