Varanasi, June 8: The police administration in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, is actively demolishing illegal structures in the Daalmandi area. Once again, over 100 buildings will be demolished under the supervision of the Public Works Department (PWD). The police have implemented strict security measures for this operation.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Atul Anjan Tripathi, stated in an interview that a dedicated team from the PWD is overseeing the entire process. The PWD and administrative officials are working diligently to expedite the Daalmandi project. To facilitate the demolition of five and six-story buildings, the PWD has brought in excavators. Additionally, the PWD has announced the demolition of 14 new buildings, all of which have been registered.
Tripathi mentioned that the demolition of over 100 structures is ongoing under tight security. Plans are in place to demolish more structures on June 11 and 15. On Monday, a total of 187 properties were identified for demolition, including 181 houses and six mosques. Approximately 1,400 shops were also located in this area. The demolition began on October 29, 2025, with a total of 60 houses already demolished. Currently, 121 houses and six mosques remain, although the mosques will not be demolished until the end of the operation.
This widening project is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in Varanasi, making transportation more efficient. According to departmental information, dilapidated buildings are being prioritized for demolition. The widening of the Daalmandi area has long been necessary due to frequent traffic jams in its narrow lanes. Local residents and business owners have welcomed this initiative, as it is expected to improve traffic flow and enhance the area’s aesthetics.
Furthermore, Daalmandi Street in Varanasi is set to be developed as a model road. Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation for this project during his 51st visit to Kashi. The state government has allocated ₹215.88 crores for this initiative, with ₹191 crores designated as compensation for 186 building and shop owners.
