Demand for CBI Investigation into Political Violence in West Bengal

Kolkata, May 7: Political rhetoric has intensified in West Bengal following the election results and the alleged political violence that ensued. Sougata Roy, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has strongly condemned the violence and called for strict action against those responsible.

Roy expressed deep concern over the murder of Chandranath Rath, a personal assistant to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. He stated that there is no place for violence and political killings in a democracy. The culprits must be held accountable promptly, and accusations should be avoided. He demanded a fair investigation into the incident.

Taking a firmer stance, Roy insisted that the investigation into Rath’s murder should be conducted by the CBI under judicial supervision to uncover the truth. He described such incidents as tragic for democracy and emphasized the need for the immediate arrest of those responsible. He asserted that the TMC has no connection to this incident, which is being labeled as part of post-election violence.

Roy noted that several incidents of political violence have occurred in the state over the past few days, including the murders of some TMC workers. He condemned all these events and reiterated the need for an impartial investigation, stating that it is incorrect to link any political party to violence until the investigation is complete.

When questioned about ‘Operation Sindoor,’ Roy mentioned that he lacks complete information on the operation, as detailed defense matters are not shared even with parliament members. He remarked that while the government describes it as an 88-hour operation, the actual results remain unclear. He expressed condolences for any losses and insisted that full information should be made public.

Responding to the election results, Roy stated that he does not wish to categorize the outcomes based on caste or tribe. Generally, the BJP has secured more seats compared to the TMC.

He also added that interpreting the results based on SC, ST, and general categories is practically challenging, as it reflects a broader political mandate.
