New Delhi, June 27: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta of Delhi has issued a one-month deadline for all coaching centers in the city to conduct fire audits, install necessary safety equipment, and implement required safety measures.
This directive follows a tragic incident in Lucknow, where a fire at a coaching center claimed the lives of at least 15 individuals. The fire broke out in a commercial building in the Aliganj area, highlighting the urgent need for safety compliance in educational institutions.
In response to the incident, four individuals have been arrested on charges related to the fire, and four administrative officials have been suspended due to accountability issues.
On social media platform ‘X’, Chief Minister Gupta warned coaching institutions, stating, “One month. That is the deadline. The number of coaching centers in Delhi is not the issue. The safety and protection of our children is what matters.”
She emphasized that strict action, including sealing, would be taken against any coaching center that fails to comply with the regulations within the stipulated time frame.
Gupta urged students to report any unsafe coaching institutions via message, email, or phone, assuring that every complaint would be addressed. “There will be no compromise on our children’s safety,” she affirmed.
The Chief Minister’s warning comes at a time when a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court, demanding the establishment and implementation of a ‘National Minimum Fire and Life-Safety Framework’ for high-risk public places across the country.
The petition references several major incidents, including fires at Uphaar Cinema, AMRI Hospital, the Takshashila Arcade coaching center in Surat, the Grain Market, TRP Game Zone in Rajkot, a recent fire at a guest house in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, and the coaching center fire in Lucknow.
